Uganda Health Trip Update

By taking our time to understand what is really happening and needed in Uganda we are now clearer and confident in how we should respond. Having the professional expertise and experience of Angela and Sarah has meant we have been able to discern the relevant needs and establish a relevant response.

The first four days we were in Mbale, a city on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the eastern region of Uganda. We started by meeting the community in Nabigyo and seeing the sanitation work that has been done. It was so encouraging to see the latrines established, finished and appreciated by the community. We saw the site where the next latrine will be built.

We met the executive director at Cure Hospital, handed out mosquito nets, did some primary health education http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx1-GwMJn4g and distributed clothing to staff and children of Pencott Primary School. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdZFjJXlnQw

On our visit to Cure we were introduced to the concept of Village Health Teams and have been in contact with the director of a pilot scheme in the south west.

On our return to Kampala we met the board of Cancer Support Uganda CASU. We decided to stay in Kampala and connect with Dr Wamala and Dr Luwago at Mulago Hopsital.

They were kind enough to show us around the main referral hospital in Uganda. We met some key people who will be important as our health response develops.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen.
